Day 30 of my Dark Days of December Challenge – the best way to combat the winter blues – is to marvel at the lichen growing on the woody stems of my Cotoneaster.
Nature’s Living Art
The year is coming to an end, so is my challenge. I have saved one of my favourites in the garden for the penaltimate day of my challenge. Lichen is one of those fascinating organisms you often overlook until you stop and really notice it. This morning, as I checked on the Cotoneaster in my garden, I saw the intricate patterns of pale green lichen clinging to its woody stems. Against the backdrop of the few red Cotoneaster berries, it looked like nature’s own artwork. It has been really misty and foggy. Frustrating as this is the wet air enhances the colours of the lichen.
Lichen is a symbiosis between fungi and algae (and sometimes bacteria), a partnership that thrives in clean air. Its presence on the Cotoneaster is a sign that my little patch of Devon has relatively unpolluted air, which is heartening to know.
A Hidden World of Life
Lichen is more than just a pretty decoration. It provides microhabitats for tiny invertebrates, which in turn support birds and other creatures higher up the food chain. The Cotoneaster, with its dense branches and vibrant berries, already attracts birds like thrushes and blackbirds. The addition of lichen makes it even more valuable as a winter refuge.
Slowing Down to Appreciate the Small Things
Lichen is a reminder to slow down and look closely. Its delicate structures and muted colors can be easily missed if you’re rushing by. But when you stop to observe, it’s like discovering a hidden treasure. Especially, when it is wet, misty (as it has been for days here in Devon) and the colours start to stand out.
Today, take a closer look at the trees and shrubs in your garden or local area. You might just find some lichen quietly thriving, a testament to the resilience and beauty of nature in even the harshest seasons.
Let’s finish these final days of December by continuing to connect with the natural world. It’s all around us, waiting to be noticed.
Take time to pop outside and connect with nature to combat the winter blues – join others on the Devon Wildlife Trust’s 12 days of Christmas wild challenge
There is only one day left after today – if you have found the challenge late – you can still take part in the last day and hopefully this will inspire you to connect with nature at the start of 2025!
